Designer Craftsman of Spinning Tops
The spinning top is one of the most widely distributed games in the world and has amused man for thousands of years. A top’s rotation perfectly symbolises the subtle equilibrium manifest in each element of the universe.Over the years I’ve worked on many models and developed a collection of original, hand-crafted wooden tops . Today it gives me pleasure to ensure the evolution of this game through my fascinating scientific research.I hope you enjoy visiting my website filled with my spinning tops both ancient and modern.
The children must be accompanied by an adult to play with our products. We disclaim all liability in the event of an accident.

Dear All,
I wanted to get more interest and provide a way for members to participate in- person as well as remotely in a President's Challenge - Top Showdown.
The Challenge:
Who can produce a spinning top with the longest elapsed time in advance of our meeting for a shot at $565 in gift cards and prizes. Record your spin with a timer to prove it and post the video where all members can view it..
We made up some rules for the President's Challenge - Top Showdown and posted them on our club website. (Below)
Congratulations to the winners:
Here is Mark Middleton's winning entry from our members facebook page. His top went 7:21 for first place. Our dues are $50 but he picked up an oil change worth $65 from a trusted local business.
1st place Mark 7:21 $65 McWhorter Tire - Oil Change https://www.facebook.com/100000242421215/videos/4749600245058009/
2nd place Christian 6:42 $25 Velocity Bike Shop https://www.facebook.com/christianjensen93914/videos/3391620027588901/
3rd place Kent 4:00 $25 United Supermarkets https://www.southplainswoodturners.org/contests.html
4th place Ron 2:00 Prize and video coming
A gift certificate was presented to our Guest Speaker, Don Ward, to have lunch at the Tech Cafe in the amount of $25 before heading back to Wichita Falls. In addition, more Oil Change gift certificates from Stanley Ford Brownfield were donated to our host YWCA Lubbock to use as needed.
All of these tops were entered before the meeting and all makers attended in person and brought their tops to share.
A side note, at start of our meeting Saturday, I gave my big top a heave of a spin and told the group that I would have to shut up when it stopped spinning and to listen as I don't have time to repeat things - I was being timed by a top. We didn’t take any precious time away from our out -of- town guest to spin a bunch of tops.
I spoke fast and did not take questions, did not repeat myself. Got most of my chairman type announcements in before the top died in 4 minutes.
Later it was suggested that this system be used by our politicians & media types in Washington DC. No need to go 22 hours on a judicial confirmation hearing if you have a good top that will spin for 4 or 5 minutes.

President’s Challenge & Top Showdown Oct 16 & 17
The President’s Challenge is to create a single “mostly wood” spin top that will spin a long time on top of a plate. We will have a score card (Excel) of members names, top material, and elapsed time sorted from longest to shortest times.
We have secured several Gift Cards from United Supermarket and others sponsors. The turner of the longest spinning top can take his choice. Second place takes second choice and so on. It looks like most turners will go home with some kind of prize.
Here are the Rules:
1 This contest is for current dues paid members. Dues can be paid via Paypal or Mail. POB 65428 LBK TX 79464. The PayPal tool is found on the Donate tab under the Calendar tab at the top or go to https://www.southplainswoodturners.org/donate.html Ind dues are $50 and Family dues are $65 until our new year starts in June 2021.
2 If you choose to stay home you are encouraged to create a video proving your top's endurance and using www.online-stopwatch.com/full-screen-stopwatch as the background. A helper or two is suggested do these three tasks at the same time: hit record on you cell phone or device, start the timer and start the top spinning Finish by Pausing the timer when the top completely stops and then stop the recording and saving the file with the format below. We need virtual entries by noon on Friday, October 16th. There are several ways to get us your Top Showdown video.
The easiest way is to post the to our Facebook page for “South Plains Woodturner Members.” Please note the Elapsed Time & materials used in the comments.
Also, we could get via a free DropBox account. Send to [email protected], Subject & filename: First.Last.Time.Materials. Example Joe.Smith.2:35.Walnut
Another solution is to save to a USB drive labeled with the turner’s name, address, cell, number, and elapsed time. Make a paper ID tag for the USB with First, Last, Cell number, email, and best ET Elasped Time. Mail it in or drop off with a board member.
3 Virtual as well as In-Person Live contest entries need to take a single good still photo and email to Michael the Revolutions Editor by Oct 10th for publication.
4 Use A plate of your choice to make your video of the top spinning. Post to Facebook:' South Plains Woodturners Members or South Plains Woodturners Inc. by Friday at 5 PM/
5 Have FUN
Here are two resources to get you started on your TOP journey:
Virtual Entries deadline 10/16/2020
Dues paid members who choose to not attend our in person meeting on Oct 17th, at the YWCA at 6501 University, may enter the Top Show Down contest with a video of your long lasting spinning top and show an internet timer in the background. So far I have nearly $500 in total purse with the largest prize $50 from United Supermarkets in prizes for the longest spinning top.
During this difficult time we still have expenses and appreciate the passionate team of volunteers who have produced several zoom meetings, newsletters, and a pair of outdoor meetings. Dues are coming in and can be paid online or mail.
Here is a sample video of a top with a timer. Next time I will get a helper or use a tripod. Save the file on a USB with a filename FirstLastTimeSpecies such as TomSmith3:00plywood. Use the FirstLastTimeSpecies and post it to the South Plains Woodturners Members Facebook page. Also make a paper ID tag for your USB with First , Last, Time, Species, and cell number so we can get it back and check our records. OK to mail it by 10/10 to the club POB 65428 LBK TX 79464 or bring it to me. We may be able to have you send it in to us via the free version of Dropbox. If it is under 25 seconds you can email it to me, [email protected] Call in the mornings if you need help, 432 528 2891.
We will determine the standings on Virtual Top Showdown and hope to post on the South Plains Woodturners Members FB page. So far I have prizes totaling nearing $500. Reach out to those businesses who are doing well, tell our story, show of our gallery and request a gift card or prize of $50 or $whatever.
